Freelancing Part Time

I have always thought that freelancing is not for everyone and similarly, freelancing part time can be equally as tricky to manage.

Freelancing part time requires dedication

One of the main problems I think with only freelancing part time is that it still requires as much, if not more, dedication and commitment as freelancing full time. The reason being that in the majority of cases you will also have a day or weekend job of some sorts; this means you need to be super organized. I think that it is also advisable to make sure that you are good at time management. Trying to sort out all of the necessary elements to freelancing whilst working a regular job can be tricky, so the key is to be prepared. This is especially important if you have a lot of commitments elsewhere.

Be prepared to work hard

I think that you have to remember that when you are freelancing there are so many things you have to find the time for other then just the work itself. I have found that finding work can be incredibly time consuming, especially if you do not know where you are looking. You will usually have to write a job proposal tailored to the job itself which can take a while. I think that for some people it may be wise to draw up a business plan to makes sure that you know what you are doing and also if your ideas are feasible in the long run.

It is also important that you are aware of all of the paperwork that you will need to do. If you do not have any experience with creating and sending invoices or completing all of the necessary tax forms then it could be worth spending some time running through this first. You may find that you cannot find the time to juggle all of this.

Another area that I think important to consider is when you will fit the work in. if you do have another job then you may have to work evenings, nights and/or weekends which could be very tiring. It is important to not make yourself ill or too stressed because then you will not be able to carry out either of your jobs effectively.

The positives to freelancing part time

I am in no way trying to put you off freelancing part time but it is worth being aware of the negatives before you commit. Of course, the perks of freelancing part time are that if you have another job then you are not so reliant upon the income. This also means that you can give freelancing a fair try as it may be that it takes a few months to really start seeing the rewards. Freelancing part time can in fact be a great way to test the water so to speak and see if it is something that you feel you would like to pursue full time.
