It's all a little daunting for me, I used to write for a magazine which has now ceased publication and getting back into the swing of things is proving difficult. Has anyone got any good advice?

I think in this market it's perseverance all the way! I think it's a tough one to be launched in to but there are a good number of freelance roles out there. I think as traditional businesses feel the pain they are more inclined to a) not take on permanent members of staff which gives a greater need for freelancers and b) explore additional marketing activities which may be include PR to drive sales. So don't worry too much. Where abouts are you based? Are there enough Network Freelance PR and Marketing Professionals locally to justify a meet up?

I agree with James, in the last few months I'm finding work has actually picked up on the freelance front and from the clients I have been speaking to, it's because they dont want to take on full time staff and dont want the risk of being tied into retainers/contracts with agencies.

When I first got into freelancing I used to work for very low rates to build up a clientele quickly then once I had proved the quality of my work I began to increase my rates - in general I kept most of my clients. If you can afford to do so its a great medium/long term strategy.

Katie, this is a bit late but I just saw this and wanted to respond. I am in the same situation as you having recently been made redundant from a well paid directorial role in an agency. I have freelanced before but, not being able to find another perm role, I had to really start making freelancing work to pay the bills. I found there's only one way to succeed and that's to be creative and proactive in marketing yourself. Write targeted letters, research your contacts and make your correspondence relevant to each company. Go to free industry events, join seminars and visit the stands at shows. Be creative about what you offer - if you can write well offer copywriting services along media / comms services, if you're good at pitching, offer training courses. You know what I'm saying. Being proactive is the best advice I could give.
