Who we are!12 November 2007 A general introduction to the reasons behind Network Freelance and the results from our initial freelancer surveys |
Who are we?
When we tried to create a service
to help freelance professionals, we asked over 400 people who we thought might
be interested, what they’d like to see on the site. We were overwhelmed with
the responses and rather than keep the information to ourselves, we thought
we’d tell you our findings, to give you an insight into those who had been
influential in what we were trying to do.
So who responded to our survey? We
asked Marketing and Public Relations consultants to tell us about themselves.
We got the views from both disciplines, and from nearly every field imaginable
within the two. From financial services to not for profit, from technology to
agriculture, from consultancy to in house and from public to private businesses;
freelancers spoke up. The vast majority of professionals we spoke to had been in
their chosen industry for over 15 years. In PR it was almost two thirds of the
professionals sampled, with a fifth having practiced between 10 to 15 years.
Experience clearly seems to count and there’s a lot of seasoned pro’s out
there!
What we thought was really
interesting was the two distinct groups of professionals on the path to
freelance freedom. One quarter of freelancers had been going for under two
years, with nearly a third practicing for over 15 years. So if you’ve got
between no years experience and more than 15 years of experience, you’re in the
right place. That’s pretty inclusive we think.
How long have you been a freelance professional?
We don’t know why the two groups
are so prominent, but our hunch is that it could be to do with the attraction
of going independent being most appealing for the very young who are less risk
averse, and the not so very young who
are freelancing to fit it in around life’s other distractions. If you’ve got
any better ideas, please let us know!
Which fits neatly with a major
point of Network Freelance: do keep telling us who you are and what you think.
It’s the only way we can tailor a service to meet the needs of its members. Get
in touch!
