Lifestyles!20 December 2007 Network Freelance has surveyed over 400 professionals in the PR industry over their working hours, read our findings... |
Network freelance is a big believer
in personal brands. We think that we’re all unique and that every freelance professional
has different needs and aspirations. The mixed bag of responses we got back
from our lifestyle questions went some way in proving this theory.
Working 9 to 5….
Nearly half of you work between 180
and 270 days per year, with a third of you working between 90 and 180 days per
year. Leading the pack were 14% of you though who worked more than 270 days per
year! Wow. And they say that freelancing is an easy life! Fortunately, in the
interest of balance there were a hardened minority of 6% who believe in levelling
the workaholics with a more casual approach to work, preferring to commit to
less than 30 days per year. More people said that they were working more this
year than they did last year, but with only a year’s data it’s difficult to
predict if this is a trend. If we were to put money on it though… we’d hazard
that it was.
How many days per year do you normally work?
On a weekly basis the trend is to
work longer than the typical 37.5 hours per week. The majority of independent
professionals worked between 41 and 50 hours per week. With only a fraction
fewer people working between 51 and 60 hours per week. Again the split between busy
ants and playful grasshoppers is evident, with 3% of you doing less than 10
hours per week and 3% of you doing more than 80 hours a week. Together you’d
make a perfect couple...
Even
lunchtimes aren’t held sacred anymore, with most people confessing to
frequently working right through them without a break. And that’s not
all. Only 9% of you never work weekends. This leaves 44% rarely working
them but 46% of you frequently working them. At least you all get the
evenings off… afraid not….
How many hours per week do you normally work?
Over 80% of you worked at least 1 or 2 nights
per week on business. And 7% even said that they were out 5 days per week on
business. Now, we’d love to know if this is under duress or under a lavish
expense account! If it’s the latter please let us know so we can come along,
for research purposes only you understand….
